What is WAP?
WAP stands for 'Wireless Application Protocol', which is a
standard for accessing the internet with wireless devices, e.g.
mobile phones, PDAs.
How do I know my mobile phone
is WAP enabled?
If you got a mobile phone in the last year or two, it is very
likely that it can be used for WAP services. Popular models that
support WAP include: Samsung SGH-A300 and Nokia 3330, 5510,
6210, 8310 and 7110. If you are unsure whether your phone is
capable of receiving WAP services you will need to ask your
service provider about it.
The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an open, global
specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices
to easily access and interact with information and services
instantly. This article reveals practical aspects of client-side
application development for WAP using Wireless Markup Language (WML)
and WMLScript.
Applications
operating over wireless communication networks use an industry
wide set of specifications known as the Wireless Application
Protocol (WAP). It defines protocols in transport, session, and
application layers. WAP applications target the mobile
e-commerce market. Through a concept stemming from the basic
idea of Unwired Planet (currently known as Phone.com), cellular
phones will connect to the World Wide Web. This connection
becomes a reality by implementing WAP gateways. Wireless Markup
Language (WML) plays the same role in WAP as HTML plays on the
Web. Using WML, WAP sites become accessible through browsers in
WAP-enabled phones (just like HTML-based Web sites are
accessible through browsers like Internet Explorer).
